Install HAL for Google Docs
Get started with HAL in your Google Docs in under 2 minutes.
Install the Add-on
Open any Google Doc and go to Extensions → Add-ons → Get add-ons, then search for "HAL". Click Install and grant the required permissions.
Open the HAL Sidebar
Go to Extensions → HAL → Open sidebar. The HAL sidebar will appear on the right side of your document.
Start Marking
Select a paragraph in your document, then click:
Human-Framed — content you wrote yourself
Human-Reviewed — content you verified and approved
Generate Summary
Click the Summary button to generate an Accountability Summary showing the percentage of your document that is framed, reviewed, or unclaimed.

Required Permissions
HAL requests the following Google permissions:
- View and manage documents — to read paragraph text and apply visual marks
- Display sidebar — to show the HAL sidebar panel
- Connect to external service — to sync audit logs with the HAL backend (paid plans)
HAL never reads or stores your document content on external servers. All marking happens locally inside Google Docs.
