Terms of Service
Last updated: February 2026
1. Acceptance of Terms
By using HAL ("Human Accountability Layer"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
2. Description of Service
HAL provides document accountability tools that allow users to mark sections of documents as human-authored or human-reviewed. HAL operates as an add-on within document editors (Google Docs, Microsoft Word) and provides backend services for audit logging and team management.
3. What HAL Is Not
HAL is a transparency and accountability tool. It is NOT:
- An AI content detector
- A plagiarism checker
- A guarantee of content authenticity
- A legal certification of authorship
HAL marks are voluntary declarations of responsibility. They represent a user's claim of accountability, not a verified fact.
4. Account and Access
- You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials
- You must provide accurate information when creating your account
- You may not share your account with others
- Team accounts are managed by a designated owner/admin
5. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use HAL to misrepresent content authorship
- Mark content as human-framed when it was not written by you
- Circumvent licensing or seat limits
- Reverse engineer or modify the HAL software
- Use HAL in violation of applicable laws
6. Pricing and Payment
- Free tier is available at no cost with limited features
- Paid plans are billed monthly or annually as indicated at checkout
- Prices may change with 30 days' notice
- Refunds are handled on a case-by-case basis
7. Data and Privacy
Your use of HAL is also governed by our Privacy Policy. HAL does not access, store, or transmit your document content.
8. Limitation of Liability
HAL is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of HAL. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the service in the preceding 12 months.
9. Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to HAL if you violate these terms. You may cancel your account at any time. Upon cancellation, your data will be deleted according to our retention policy.
10. Changes to Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via email or in-app notice. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
